Officers arrested 50 people within a five-hour time span in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood Wednesday, as part of a large sweep of individuals with outstanding warrants, police announced.
The arrestees were all wanted on suspicion of offenses such as burglary, aggravated assault and drug dealing.
Among the 50, police said, 38 are fugitives. Additionally, 12 of the arrestees were wanted in other jurisdictions such as Petaluma, Berkeley, Colma, Walnut Creek and San Mateo County.
Twelve of the 50 also face new charges as a result of the sweep, including violating court orders and possessing weapons.
Police said eight of the 50 are on parole.
The arrests are part of an overall strategy to make the city's Tenderloin neighborhood and nearby downtown areas safer. The strategy also includes more officers walking through the area and undercover operations targeting criminal activity.
"The officers of Tenderloin Station are committed to strategic enforcement designed to decrease crime and the fear of crime in the neighborhoods we serve," Tenderloin Station Capt. Carl Fabbri said in a statement.
