500 Gallons of Fuel Drained From Stranded Boat

According to U.S. Coast Guard officials, 500 gallons of fuel had to be removed from a boat stranded in a marine sanctuary near Half Moon Bay.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports authorities say fuel had been taken out of the 50-foot commercial fishing vessel Saturday due to concerns over harm to the environment.

Coast Guard officials say the boat's captain issued a distress call but later refused help from emergency responders. He insisted on staying on the boat throughout the night.
 
The Coast Guard dispatched oil spill response professionals to drain the vessel's fuel so that nothing leaked out.

The boat's owner coordinated with authorities and the vessel was hauled away safely.
