680 Commute Lane Gets Final Touch

A carpool lane on southbound Interstate Highway 680 will be  re-striped over the next week in preparation for a new express toll lane on  that roadway, the California Department of Transportation announced.
Work crews will be painting new double white stripes on the  pavement of I-680 in order to separate the new express toll lane from other lanes, the Caltrans statement said.
New access zones where motorists can enter and exit the express  lane will also be marked in the road work, which began on Thursday and is expected to be completed on Sept. 19, the statement said.
No tolls will be charged during the work period and the lane being  re-striped will continue to function as a carpool or high-occupancy vehicle  lane during the project, Caltrans said.
An 8-mile segment of I-680 from Washington Boulevard in Fremont to  State Route 237 in Milpitas is expected to be re-striped in time for the  Monday morning commute on Sept. 13, Caltrans said.
The new express lane is scheduled to open at 5 a.m. on Sept. 20.  For more information about the improvement is available at  www.680expresslane.org.
