A 70-year-old man died after being struck by an Amtrak train Wednesday morning as he was crossing the tracks with a cart of groceries in Union City, according to police.
The collision took place on Railroad Avenue at H Street around 8:45 a.m., Lt. Jeff Snell said.
The victim, a Union City resident, was in "very bad condition," Snell said. He was taken to a hospital where he died.
A witness told investigators that the train track's crossing arms were down and a warning bell was sounding, but the victim had just barely gotten across the tracks when the strike occurred.
It hit the grocery cart, and may have also made contact with the victim, although that remains unclear at this time, according to police.
Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said there were 112 passengers and 4 crewmembers on Train No. 525, which was headed toward San Jose at the time of the strike.
None of them were injured, and passengers were given the chance to transfer to BART or chartered buses to reach their destinations.

The incident led to serious congestion for train traffic in the area, with Train No. 527 departing Hayward roughly 90 minutes late.
Street traffic in the area around the crash scene was impacted for at least an hour, according to police.
