72 Citations Issued in San Francisco Speeding Crackdown

Police in South San Francisco issued 72 speeding citations Saturday as part of a crackdown throughout the city, especially on streets where speed and other traffic issues have been a recurring problem, police said.

The citations were issued as part of a "saturation patrol" effort made possible by a grant to the South San Francisco police from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Each of these patrols consists of officers using "lidar" devices, with highly accurate lasers that can isolate specific vehicles on a crowded roadway.

These patrols targeted roadways with high traffic collision rates, police said. The drivers cited were traveling an average of 15 mph over the posted speed limit.
