After Victory, Khanna Says He'll Bring ‘New Energy' to Silicon Valley District

Honda concedes and makes plea for Democrats to unite

One of the Bay Area’s most contentious political races pitted two Democrats against each other in a rematch for the 17th congressional district seat. And the result was a changing of the guard.

Ro Khanna defeated 16-year incumbent Mike Honda in Tuesday's election, and on Wednesday, Honda issued a statement formally conceding defeat. He then encouraged Democrats to come together and unite around progressive values.

Meanwhile, Khanna said he's ready to make some changes.

"I think I will bring new energy back into the district," Khanna said, referring to the area that covers much of Silicon Valley. "I'm going to be spending much more time back here in the district and holding town forums. And I will accept no PAC money, so I'll try to reach across the aisle to find common ground."

Khanna added that his top priority is education reform. He will travel to Washington, D.C., on Monday for congressional orientation.

In 2014, Khanna went up against Honda and lost. He credited Tuesday's victory to his new wife and spending more time meeting with voters face to face.
