Anger, Outrage at Tragic Death of 32-Year-Old Mom Crushed by Gravel Truck

Family and friends say Lindsey Combs was pregnant with her second child at the time of the accident

It’s a day of mourning and anger for many people in Martinez following the tragic death of a pregnant woman.

Thirty-two year old Lindsey Combs was crushed by an overturned gravel truck Monday as she was preparing to move her car out of her driveway.

That gravel truck was part of a major construction project and on Tuesday, many of her neighbors are angry the city resumed construction less than 24 hours after the tragedy.

“There’s no word … There’s absolutely no word. I’m having a difficult time,” said Amy Dubinsky, who is struggling to understand the loss of Combs, her neighbor and friend. “This could have happened to any of us.”

A worker with JJR Construction was helping Combs back out of her driveway to make room for a gravel truck when that truck tipped and crushed Combs inside her car.

CAL-Osha is investigating what happened.

Friends of the family say Combs was a devoted mother to her four-year-old daughter and was pregnant with her second child.

Her fiancé was inside the house when the accident happened along with her young daughter — who saw it all unfold.

On Tuesday, many stopped by to pay their respects outside the home even as construction continued around the memorial. Many neighbors feel the work should have stopped, at least temporarily, out of respect to the family and to allow friends and family of Combs to grieve in peace.

“I wish construction would stop so we could have a memorial,” said Dubinsky.

The City of Martinez is adding sidewalks to Shell Ave.

Calls to the City of Martinez for comment on why construction resumed so quickly were not returned.

A GoFund me page has been created to help the Combs family pay for funeral expenses.
