Tech giant Apple has been given the green light to expand into San Jose.
The San Jose City Council on Tuesday approved Apple's bold plan to build its 86-acre campus in North San Jose, at 2325 Orchard Way and North First Street, near Mineta San José International Airport.
The area is a mostly vacant lot, right across the street from the NBC Bay Area studios.
Apple has a 15-year window to develop the area, which could include 4.15 million square feet of office space. The project is expected to generate more than 16,000 jobs to San Jose.
Apple's headquarters would remain in Cupertino, even though the deal gives the company more space in San Jose than it owns in Cupertino.

San Jose's assistant director of economic development Nanci Klein, who led the negotiations between Apple and the city, said "the inclusion of Apple in the fabric of San Jose is increasingly valuable."
Property tax revenue generated by the deal will go to retire debt from the city's former redevelopment agency, Klein told the Mercury News.
Apple officials said Tuesday about a quarter of its employees are San Jose residents, the newspaper reported.
