In what is becoming one of the coolest tech/holiday traditions, the musical geniuses at Smule busted out Christmas carols on Wednesday, treating shoppers to something they'd never heard before.
They weren't just singing, although they do that very well.
Executives and engineers from Smule, a SF startup that creates popular music apps like "Ocarina," "Mad Pad," and "Magic Piano," played on their mobile devices to create the background music as well. It all sounded very professional, and looks on the faces of shoppers as they got closer and noticed all the iPhones and iPads was priceless.
Smule caroled in from of a San Francisco Apple store last year, and was in front of the Stanford Shopping Center Apple store this year. It's not officially talked about, but you have to figure that an app company using i-devices to create music is on Apple's favorite company list.
Shoppers stopped outside the store to listen and dance. Some brave people even took the mic to join in on Smule's Karaoke app.
As for Smule itself, it looks like a fun startup. Lots of musical talent, and no fear of putting it out there for the public. In fact, CEO Jeff Smith just wrapped up a PhD program (in Computer music, natch) at Stanford - while running the company.
