Arrests Made in Theft Involving Sonoma Family Killed in Crash

Sonoma police say two arrests have been made in the burglary of the home of the family killed over the weekend in a car crash.

Amber True  and her boyfriend Michael Gutierrez were  arrested in San Mateo County, Sonoma Police Chief Brett Sackett said.  Bay City News is reporting San Mateo County sheriff's deputies pulled True over in a routine  traffic stop and found that she had a credit card belonging to one of the victims.     San Mateo County sheriff's deputies notified Sonoma detectives,  who tracked down Gutierrez, True's boyfriend. He was caught driving the  Maloney family's missing 2006 Nissan 350Z and was arrested in rural San Mateo  County.

John Maloney, his wife Susan, and their children Aiden and Grace were killed when a 2009 Mini Cooper crashed into their car around 9:20 p.m. Saturday.

They family was driving home from SFO after spending Thanksgiving in Hawaii.

Sonoma police say sometime early Tuesday thieves broke into the family's home.  The house was ransacked and things were taken including the family's car.

β€œIt's incredibly despicable,”  Sackett told the Press Democrat. β€œIt's such a tragic event for a family already suffering.”

Sonoma detectives spent most of Tuesday gathering evidence at the home and are relying on relatives to help them figure out  exactly what was stolen.    Although the car was found, it was not immediately clear if any of the stolen items were located.

Chief Sackett said the thief or thieves got in by forcing open a side door of the garage.  Relatives were there late Monday night, so the burglary had to have happened sometime after midnight.  A friend of the family discovered what happened Tuesday morning after noticing the garage door was open.

True and Gutierrez are in custody in Sonoma County and were booked  into jail on charges of burglary and theft, Sonoma police said. Their bail  has been set at $500,000

The memorial service is set for Friday at Andrews Hall at 2 p.m.
