Arsonist Takes Aim at News

A liquid concoction was used to blow up a Chronicle stand

San Francisco arsonists are staying busy this year. First it was portable toilets, then cars, and now an innocent newspaper stand.

A single newspaper stand in the Sunset District is toast after exploding into three pieces Monday night.

A person living near Taraval Street and 37th Avenue called police after he heard a loud bang just outside his front door around 9 p.m.

When police arrived they found that a Chronicle stand had burst at the seams.

A bomb squad was called to the scene to investigate.  They concluded that the arsonist used some kind of homemade liquid concoction to blow the thing up. Apparently nothing caught on fire, because there was no evidence of charring or burning.

Police Sgt. Lyn Tomioka told Bay City News that they have no suspects.

Tomioka said police are not aware of any other similar incidents. An arson investigation is ongoing.
