Los Angeles-based Laura Izumikawa, who takes amazing photos of her sleeping baby, has nothing on Petaluma, Calif. mom Audrey Kelly, who has been snapping pics of her 1-year-old in homemade Halloween costumes every single day leading up to Halloween.
“People are always sending me links to stories about that LA mom,” Kelly said. “But man, taking pictures on a sleeping baby is cake! Try doing it with a teething toddler with full mobility who can take off her costume. Now that is challenging.”
For the second consecutive year, Kelly, who was an actor and pastry chef before becoming a full-time mom, has been whipping out her iPhone in October and documenting how adorable her daughter, Sullivan "Sully" Mae Kelly, is on Instagram and Facebook. This year’s spread shows Sullivan as Madonna, Pee Wee Herman, Rey from Star Wars, Madeline, Annie Hall and David Bowie.
“David Bowie was a little harder than I thought,” Kelly said. “Sullivan is really strong willed. She wanted to help out with the makeup. It made the process a lot slower.”
As for Madonna? "That was fun," Kelly said. “I played 'Express Yourself' and just let her play."
Sully conducts her shoots in her dining room where the lighting is the best, and she said she has the full support of her husband, Brendon Kelly, a vice president of sales at BetterUp in San Francisco.
She has no professional background and her gear consists of her smart phone, duct tape, pipe cleaners and other odds and ends, which she styles into costumes. Sometimes her mom pitches in with the sewing too.
As for why she does it? Kelly has thought long and hard about it. “I have often asked myself why,” she said. “It’s time-consuming and expensive.”
But a few things bring her back. “It’s a fun, bonding experience with my daughter,” Kelly said. “And so many people follow it now. People I don’t even know say it’s the highlight of their day. If I can bring a little happiness, love and joy, then it’s the least I can do.”
