“Average” Snowfall Thrills Ski Resorts Tired Of Dry Weather

Ski resorts celebrating normal.

Snow should fall this winter -- and that promise is more than good enough.

Sierra ski resort operators are rejoicing at the propsects of a "normal" year of snowfall, according to reports, with several years of lackluster snowfall -- and bad business -- behind them.

"'Normal' is absolutely fantastic," a spokesman for Kirkwood told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Temperatures are cold and the season's first big storm rolled through last week, the newspaper reported, which means there's fresh snow already on trails.

Ski resorts are opening lifts this weekend, though a "strong season" may be too much to ask for.

Neither El Niño nor La Niña are in effect, which means weather will be dictated by unpredictable, "short-term weather systems," the newspaper reported.

In the meantime, ski resorts are banking on normal: they've sunk "tens of millions" into new snowmaking machines and other upgrades, according to the Chronicle.
