BART Trains to Open to Bikes on Fridays

Fridays will be open season for bikes on BART in August.

Have bike, can travel on BART all day on Friday -- beginning in August.

Starting in the late summer month, bicycles will be welcome on all BART trains on Fridays only, according to the San Francisco Examiner.

Bikes are currently banned from trains during the morning and evening peak commute hours, the newspaper noted. But the transit agency is trying to boost bike ridership, and in an effort to do so, is beginning a pilot project where bicycles will be welcome during those hours on Fridays beginning in August, the newspaper reported.

Currently, 4 percent of BART riders use bikes, the newspaper reported. The agency wants to bump that figure up to 8 percent, the newspaper reported.

Bikes will still be banned from crowded trains and the first car of a train.
