Woman in Stolen Jeep Killed in Oakland

A woman was killed Monday morning in a Jeep that had been reported stolen in the Fruitvale district, police said.

The woman's name, age and city of residence has not been released pending notification of her family.

Police said she had been driving east about 11:30 a.m. in the 3600 block of Foothill Boulevard in the Jeep when police say she swerved to avoid hitting something in the road; police don't yet know what she was trying to avoid.

The woman crashed into a Honda and the Jeep flipped over. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Honda was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries, but police said the person was expected to survive.

The Jeep the woman was driving had been reported stolen near 19th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard.

The Jeep's owner, speaking off camera to NBC Bay Area, said he had been working on his car, went inside for a minute and when he came back out, he saw a woman taking off in his Jeep.

He also said he has seen the woman before in his neighborhood, though he did not know her name.
