Sacred Heart Community Service in San Jose collects backpacks for students and gives them away.
This year, there are more than 500 people in line just to sign up for the service. Some kids arrived before dawn to get a spot in line.
Sacred Heart also gives gift cards to children when they can, sometimes for Target.
Registration continues at Sacred Heart until 3 p.m. on Friday, July 13. It's on South First Street in San Jose.
