Basketball Meeting: Office Towers Included In Plan For New Warriors Arena

No waterfront, but office towers, a plaza, and some tree-lined streets.

One day, you might not need to play basketball to work at the Golden State Warriors arena.

You won't even need to work for the team at all.

Office towers -- two of them, in fact -- will straddle tree-lined walkways and pedestrian plazas at the Warriors' new arena, when the Mission Bay-based venue is scheduled to open.

The San Francisco Examiner reports that the Warriors have given the public its first peek at the team's to-be Mission Bay home, the first glimpse since plans to build an arena on the waterfront were abandoned.

Designers have dubbed the Dubs' new digs part of "Mission Bay's cultural center," the newspaper reported.

Around the 135-foot tall, 18,000-person arena will be built two 160-foot office towers, looming over up to 95,000 square feet of retail space.

A 700-car lot will provide parking for the $1 billion project, which will be built entirely with private funds on land once owned by Salesforce.com.

Team president Rick Welts made a presentation to a meeting of Mission Bay residents on Thursday night. He warned that it's a "very initial" peek at what things may come in four years -- but designers noted that the team is crafting "a place, not a bunch of buildings," the newspaper reported.

And in time, the place will come.
