Bay Area Charity in Need of Food Donations for Thanksgiving

Sacred Heart Community Service still needs 2,000 turkeys to help feed families during the holiday

A South Bay charity may not have enough for families who won't have Thanksgiving dinner without a little help.

Sacred Heart Community Service promised to help 4,000 San Jose families and still needs 2,000 turkeys to make good on that promise.

Volunteers at Sacred Heart spent Monday filling boxes with about 20 pounds of food -- perishables and non-perishable items to go with a turkey. Donors on Monday also showed up to drop off turkeys and other goods for Thanksgiving dinner.

Sacred Heart said it is getting more requests from working families who battle the high cost of living only to find expenses go up during the holidays, from higher heating bills to childcare costs when school is out.

"Rents have gone up 10 percent in just the last year and over 50,000 households had their benefits cut for food stamps just this month," said Carol Stephenson of Sacred Heart. "So they're having to stretch their budgets a lot more."

Sacred Heart Community Service said they can put donations to use anytime between now and Christmas, when they'll help with food and toys.
