California real estate is notoriously expensive, so it is no wonder the West Coast topped a list of the nation's richest cities.
Residents in San Francisco, which was No. 1, need more than $124,000 a year to live "comfortably," USA Today estimates.
Right behind San Francisco at No. 2 is San Jose, where to be comfortable, residents need to bring in about $115,000.
Two others California cities made the list: San Diego and Los Angeles.
San Diego ranked No. 5 on the list. Residents there need more than $101,000 to live comfortably there. And in Los Angeles, which ranked No. 8, residents need more than $102,000.
The rankings were adjusted to compensate for cost of living in each city.
