Bay Area commuters were irked Tuesday evening after BART reported major delays in the East Bay this evening due to an equipment problem on a train in San Leandro.

Twitter user @tamikka asked on Twitter: "Did @SFBART shut down its trains so we'd vote #measureRR? We are off the train and single-tracking."

BART, which carries 100,000 people, is hoping that Measure RR passes Tuesday night. The measure is a $3.5 billion bond to fix the 44-year-old BART system that in the recent past has shut down several times for electrical surge issues.

"Rushed out of work early to go vote, but my BART got stuck... Let me out! It's hot & I can't let Susan B Anthony down," another BART rider tweeted.

Twitter user @ldaliaizzy tweeted: "BART is down on election night how is this possible."

BART officials reported the problem on social media at 5:49 p.m., saying passengers headed in the Dublin, Fremont, Richmond and Daly City directions are currently affected.
