There's a lot to love about the San Francisco Bay Area, but a new report may give some residents reason to cringe.
San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose, which were clumped together as one "city" in the rankings list, checked in as having the fifth-highest amount of rats in the country, according to a report conducted by Orkin, a pest control company.
Chicago topped the charts while New York and Washington D.C. followed suit in the rankings, according to Orkin.
While humans break out their winter gear and cozy up inside their warm abodes, those furry rodents are doing just the same. Orkin said that this time of year marks the point in time when rats and mice escape the elements by burrowing inside homes.
Even if you think your home is completely sealed, John Kane, an entomologist and Technical Director of Orkin's Midwest Region, says rats and mice can be pretty nimble critters.
"Rats can squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter, while mice can fit through a hole the size of a dime," he said.
Orkin generates the annual results by totaling the number of residential and commercial rodent treatments it responds to each year.

The specific rat and mice totals for each of the three Bay Area cities listed in the report were not made available. The Bay Area was also not the only collection of locations to be classified as a "city" by the report. Seattle and Tacoma, Minneapolis and St. Paul, and Miami and Ft. Lauderdale were just a handful of other places to be lumped together as a "city."
