The Bay Area boasts some of the most dangerous and safest areas in California, according to recently released FBI crime data.
San Francisco led all Bay Area cities with 6,710 reported violent crimes in 2015 while both Belvedere and Monte Sereno reported a blank slate of vicious offenses, according to the FBI data.
Behind Los Angeles's state-high 25,156 violent attacks, San Francisco reported the second highest amount of brutal violations in the golden state, just ahead of Oakland, which settled in at third place with 6,051. San Jose recorded 3,400 violent offenses, putting the South Bay city behind San Diego, Stockton and Sacramento.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Hillsborough, Los Altos Hills and Kensington each recorded just one instance of violence in their neighborhoods during 2015.
The FBI defines violent crimes as murder, non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.
When examining the raw statistics, the FBI cautions residents to take the numbers with a grain of salt. Crime reporting practices and population differences are just some of the variables that can skew any comparisons made between different regions within the state.
