Bay Area Man Sucked Into Hawaiian Blowhole

Family vacation turns tragic for North Bay couple.

The search for a 44-year-old Bay Area husband and father who fell into a Maui blow hole in front of his family has been called off.

The official search for David Potts, 44, ended Monday afternoon.

Maui rescuers had searched for three days by air and jet ski.

Maui police spokesman Lt. Wayne Ibarra told AP that Potts was sightseeing when a wave knocked him down Saturday afternoon.

Potts was swept into the blow hole off Nakalele Point while a second man was able to hold on.  YouTube video (below) shows the hole is about two feet in diameter.

Ibarra says rough waters on the northern side of the island and poor visibility complicated the search.

Potts was in Maui with his wife, infant child and extended family, according to AP.
