Bay Area Rapid Transit: Thefts, Arrests Up in 2017

Bay Area Rapid Transit officials say the train system experienced a spike in thefts in 2017.

Figures released by BART on Tuesday show 417 reports of stolen phones, laptops and other electronic devices in 2017, up from 274 in 2016.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that many of those thefts were classified as violent because a suspect used force or intimidation.

BART Police Chief Carlos Rojas said the agency is focused on improving safety and is making progress. BART police made 1,730 arrests in 2017 — up 40 percent from 2016.
