Bay Area Students Spell “Sevruga,” “Toboggan” Correctly At Scripps National Spelling Bee

The Bay Area has two young wordsmiths participating in this year's 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee, and they both spelled their words correctly Wednesday, the first day of preliminaries.

Santa Clara's Meera Suresh, 12,  spelled "sevruga" (a type of caviar from sturgeon) and Danville's Timothy Yue, 13, spelled "toboggan" ( a type of sled) without any flubs.

Meera is a 7th grader at Warren E. Hyde Middle School and Timothy is a 7th grader at The Dorris-Eaton School.

This year, there are 285 spellers in the Bee, the youngest being 9 and the oldest being 15.There are 139 boys participating and 146 girls.

Semifinals and the championship finals will be held on Thursday and will be broadcast on ESPN.

The Spelling Bee winner takes home $30,000.
