Timelapse Video: Old Bay Bridge Cantilevers Should Be Gone By Summer

The last parts of the west and east cantilevers of the old Bay Bridge should be taken down by this summer.

In a video posted by Metropolitan Transportation Commission video journalist Mark Jones on the update of the demolition project, Caltrans engineer Bill Howe says the remainder of the west cantilever should be taken down by some time in April, with the east cantilever to be taken down by June. He also estimates that the bike path will be finished by June or July and open by the end of the year.

Caltrans' second phase of demolition is set to begin this summer, with much of the upper portion of the old Bay Bridge expected to be gone by 2018. The timeline takes into consideration the nesting seasons of birds that make temporary homes in the old structure.

A contract has not yet been awarded for the third phase of demolition, which will involve destroying the foundations, reported the Associated Press.
