Matt Bloesch said.

Officers arrived to find a female victim with major traumatic injuries. While rendering aid to her, the officers attained suspect information, he said.

Other officers searched the surrounding area and found the suspect, who led them on a foot pursuit onto Highway 12, he said.

Police tried to subdue the suspect with less-lethal weapons but were unsuccessful, Bloesch said.

The suspect then attempted to attack officers with a knife, and at least one officer shot him, Bloesch said.

Police said the victim remains in critical condition Tuesday night after sustaining more than 30 stab wounds.  The victim’s name cannot be released due to victim confidentiality laws, but there had been a past relationship between her and the suspect, police said. This incident is being investigated as a crime of domestic violence.

Traylor was on parole for robbery and has a lengthy criminal history, according to police.

Both directions of state Highway 12 were closed for several hours between Pennsylvania and Beck avenues.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, Bloesch said.
