Berkeley Parents Fight to Keep Children Out of Portable Classrooms

A group of Berkeley parents is getting creative in their fight to keep children out of portable classrooms.

There is a school district plan to add portable classrooms at Thousand Oaks Elementary School. The district would use land around the school, including a playground and nearby park to do it.

But that’s where things get tricky. The parents point out that playgrounds and parks are public, and cannot be used for other purposes unless voters approve it.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that the parents are so convinced portables are not a good learning environment, they could sue if the district does not drop the plan.

Berkeley’s city attorney is considering the claim and is expected to make a determination soon.
