Berkeley Police: Homeless Man Arrested for Attempted Sexual Assault of UC Student

A UC Berkeley student is recovering after an attempted sexual assault near the campus on Monday morning.

A homeless man attacked the student while she was walking in broad daylight north of campus near Arch and Virginia streets about 11:30 a.m., police said. According to officers, the man hit her from behind, knocking her into a grassy area.

The suspect then pinned the victim on the ground and covered her mouth as she attempted to scream, then attempted to sexually assault her, police said.

The suspect stole the victim's cellphone and identification before fleeing the area, according to police.

Police arrested 51-year-old Wilfred Allen. Officers found him not far from the scene of the attack with the victim’s property. He is expected to answer to a long list of felony charges in court on Friday.
