Bicyclists Targeted in San Francisco Robberies

Bicyclists riding through San Francisco's Panhandle neighborhood are being targeted by robbers, according to police.

San Francisco police said three cyclists were attacked this month on the Panhandle bike path while riding late at night, including one reported late Friday.

The San Francisco Bike Coalition also reports three violent incidents where bike thieves hit riders over the head or stuck something in their spokes to cause a crash.

Robbers in the attack have taken the bikes and other valuables from riders.

"As cyclists we have to look out for cars and its hairy downtown," cyclist Joe Gordon said. "And now this -- it's really disturbing."

Some cyclists said they plan to avoid the Panhandle at night.

"When it's dark I'm not coming through the Panhandle anymore," Gordon said. "I'll go down Haight Street now."

Meanwhile, the bike coalition is calling for more police patrols. The coalition also is telling cyclists not to ride alone in the Panhandle and to be cautious of their surroundings.
