Saturday was a busy day for animal shelters across the Bay Area.
Over 40 local organizations partnered with NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48 for “Clear the Shelters” Day.
The goal? To help cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, lizards and even a duck get adopted.
As of Monday morning, 1,026 pets were able to find new families in the Bay Area. And 18,554 pets nationwide will no longer be forced to sleep in overcrowded shelters. [[321952091, C]]
To mark "Clear the Shelters" Day, participating animal shelters offered no-cost or reduced fee adoptions or waived pet spaying and neutering fees. Other shelter fees may have applied. [[321971841, C]]
"There are thousands of animals sitting in shelters across the Bay Area right now waiting for families to rescue them. We’re proud to be working with numerous shelters across the Bay Area to help 'Clear the Shelters' and help find these animals permanent, loving homes," said Rich Cerussi, president and general manager of NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48. Bay Area residents looking to adopt were encouraged to visit Berkeley’s Humane Society, the site of a family-friendly block party. More than 12 pet adoption organizations, stationed at the corner of 9th and Carleton Streets, helped over 67 dogs and 42 cats find new homes.

San Francisco’s SPCA also hosted "Rescue Row on Alabama" where pets were up for on-the-spot adoptions.
Meanwhile, the Peninsula Humane Society offered a carnival-style "Adopt-a-Thon" in Burlingame. Over 150 dogs and cats were available for adoption and people were able to "name their fee" and determine how much they wanted to contribute to adopt their forever companion.
