Biggest City in California Wine Country Latest to Cap Rents

The biggest city in Northern California's wine country is the latest to enact rent control.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that supervisors in the Sonoma County city of Santa Rosa voted 4-2 on Tuesday night to cap rent increases.

The new measure bars owners of older apartments from raising rents more than 3 percent a year unless they've carried out major improvements on the property.

Santa Rosa is on the northern edge of the San Francisco Bay area. The thriving, tech-fueled economy in the area has helped make housing prices in the region among the highest in the country, leading many cities to look at rent control.

Rents in Sonoma County are estimated to have risen 45 percent over the last five years.
