Body Cameras for San Jose Cops by Next Year

San Jose cops could get body-mounted cameras by next year

Starting next year, you can smile wide when encountering San Jose police officers.

You'll be on camera.

Cops in Northern California's largest city will be able to wear body cameras paid for by a state grant beginning in January 2015, according to San Jose Inside.

An independent police auditor has been pushing for San Jose police to wear the cameras -- worn by police in other jurisdictions -- for "years," the website reported.

The hope is that by recording their encounters with the public, police will have a measure of transparency and accountability. Not to mention some defense against lawsuits.
