Brazen Kidnap Attempt Reported in Newark

Police are searching a Newark neighborhood for a man who attacked a teenage girl on the street early this morning then fired a shot at a motorist who followed him as he fled.

A 15-year-old girl was walking near Parkshore and Edgewater drives, toward Cedar Boulevard, at about 6:40 a.m. when a man came up and grabbed her from behind, knocking her to the ground, police said.

The teen kicked and screamed, and was able to break free from the man, who walked away down Parkshore Drive, according to police.

The girl's creams caught the attention of a passing bicyclist. The bicyclist alerted a motorist, who followed the attacker down Parkshore Drive until the suspect turned around and fired three shots from a handgun toward  the driver, police said.

No one was hit by the bullets.

The suspect was last seen headed north on Parkshore Drive. He is described as a black man in his late teens to early 20s, 6 feet 2 inches tall, with a medium build. He had a goatee and stubble, and was wearing a black knit cap and black, baggy clothing.
