CHP Fatally Shoots BMW Driver During Chase

Oakland police say a suspect was killed Tuesday morning after a California Highway Patrol officer shot him at the end of a chase involving a stolen BMW.

Spokeswoman Johnna Watson said the suspect died at the scene, and that he had a gun. Two officers fired their weapons, she said, and it's unknown of the suspected fired his gun.

The chase was first reported about 2:45 a.m. when two CHP officers in a patrol cruiser spotted a BMW X5 without license plates on Interstate 580 near High Street in Oakland and tried to pull it over, police said.

But Watson said the driver refused to stop, leading the officers on a chase through city streets. The pursuit ended on East 15th Street, a dead-end street east of 57th Avenue, where the driver ran away.

A scuffle led to at least the pair of officers opening fire on the man, Watson said.

The shooting is under investigation by the CHP, Oakland police and the Alameda County district attorney's office.
