CHP Officer Shot During Traffic Stop

Suspected shooter of officer shot and killed in shoot out that followed.

A California Highway Patrol officer was shot Sunday evening on Highway 99 near Elk Grove, according to Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies.

The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. during what began as a routine traffic stop. 

Investigators said as the officer approached the vehicle he was shot at multiple times. 

The sheriffs told KCRA that the suspected gunman was shot and killed in a shoot out that followed. 

The CHP officer had already called for back up for the initial stop.

Elk Grove police officers reported hearing shots and responded with shots of their own.

When one of the responding officers returned fire, the driver of the car traveled a short distance. During that manuever, the man's car rolled over the shoulder and overturned.

The injured officer is in stable condition at an area hospital, KCRA reported. The Sacramento Bee reported his injuries were not considered life threatening.
