Hummer Driver Charged in Fatal Livermore Crash Identified

The California Highway Patrol on Friday released a photo of the 53-year-old Hummer driver who they arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter after a fiery four-car crash that killed one person in Livermore.

Primitivo Garcia of Livermore was taken into custody on Thursday and booked into Santa Rita Jail after being treated for his injuries at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley. CHP Officer Steve Creel said Garcia was behind the wheel of his Hummer about 10 a.m. on  Interstate Highway 580  just east of North Livermore Avenue when it slammed into several cars, including a Jeep Cherokee driven by 29-year-old Reed Whittaker of Livermore.

Those two cars hit another two cars, and the Jeep burst into flames. The fire spread to the Hummer, but Garcia and his passenger, a man in his 20s, were able to escape.

When emergency crews were eventually able to approach the Jeep, they realized that Whittaker had died.

Traffic was snarled for hours while the crash was investigated.
