An 88-year-old Northern California was recovering at a hospital on Tuesday after spending the weekend trapped inside her overturned car in an embankment.
Jean Wright, of St. Helena, was rescued Monday morning, more than two days after she apparently hit a utility pole and went down the 40-foot embankment on a rural road in unincorporated Santa Rosa, the California Highway Patrol said.
Wright was upside down when she was found by a tractor-trailer driver around 10 a.m. Monday. The truck driver, Jesus Gutierrez, of Oakley, had driven by her three hours earlier and came back after noticing something suspicious, CHP Officer Kimberly Lemons said.
He flagged down a passing Sonoma County Sheriff's deputy, who called for assistance.
Wright had left Petaluma for her home around 8 p.m. Friday before she crashed. Lemons said the pole Wright struck was not knocked down and her car was hidden from the view of vehicles passing by. The road is also devoid of weekend truck traffic that might have been able to spot her vehicle, she said.
``It goes from downtown Santa Rosa to Jurassic Park in a series of five miles,'' she said. ``It's pretty rural out there.''
Wright was conscious and talking but in much pain when rescuers arrived, Rincon Valley Fire Engineer Sid Andreis told the Press Democrat of Santa Rosa.
She was taken to a hospital with moderate to major injuries, including broken bones.
Lemons said an officer planned to interview her on Tuesday.
