California Academy of Sciences' BigPicture is back for a second year.
The photography exhibit and contest, launched in 2014, captures extraordinary scenes of nature from across the globe.
The 48 images shown are winners that were selected from more than 6,000 international submissions.
"Flying Egrets," a photo by Zsolt Kudich showing hundreds of great egrets gathering on a dry lake bed near the Danube in Hungary, is the BigPicture Grand Prize winner.
Winners of other categories include a vivid portrait of a black rhino keeping an armed force company in Zimbabwe, an almost glamour-posed bald eagle at the Memphis Zoo, and a blood-red faced macaque chilling in the snow at a Japanese monkey park.
BigPicture is on display through Nov. 2.
