California Firefighters Gain on Applegate Fire

Firefighters are gaining ground on a wildfire along Northern California's Interstate 80 east of Sacramento that has destroyed 6 homes and threatened 400 more.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says Saturday that firefighters have contained 67 percent of the blaze, which has burned 459 acres in the communities of Applegate and Wiemar.

Two injuries were reported, but no details were provided. Residents in some areas that had been under an evacuation order were allowed to return home.

The fire began Wednesday and briefly closed Interstate 80. The cause is under investigation.

Meanwhile, a fire in Yosemite National Park was at 311 acres and 54 percent contained. The U.S. Forest says the fire was sparked by hot metal fragments from a vehicle.
