California Sets State Record for Low Voter Turnout

California set a record last month for low voter turnout in a regularly scheduled general election.

The secretary of state's office says final statewide results Friday show that 42.2 percent of registered voters cast ballots.

The previous low was in 2002, when half of those eligible actually voted. Primary turnout already hit a record low in June when one in four registered voters cast ballots.

The lowest turnout for any statewide November election was 36.4 percent in 1993. But that was a special election on seven ballot measures.

Sierra County had the highest turnout last month, with 73 percent of registered voters. Los Angeles County was lowest, with 31 percent.

Sixty-one percent of voters statewide voted by mail, up from 48 percent during the last gubernatorial election in November 2010.
