Caltrain Offers Free Rides on Celebration Train for MLK Day

Caltrain will offer free rides between San Jose and San Francisco for passengers headed to the city to remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during MLK Day on Jan. 18.

The Celebration Train plans to depart San Jose's Diridon Station at 9:45 a.m. and make stops in Palo Alto and San Mateo before arriving at the 4th and King Street Station in San Francisco. Riders can then join the MLK2016 march/parade on foot or jump on a Muni streetcar or bus to travel to the endpoint of Yerba Buena Gardens and join the community in remembering Dr. King's life and legacy.

Southbound rides after 1 p.m. will be free with the same ticket, which must be reserved in advance via Eventbrite.

A similar free ride called the Freedom Train took place for 30 years until discontinuing service last January. The new ride is being made possible by a sponsorship from PG&E, which partnered with Caltrain and the Northern California Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Foundation.
