Caltrain Strikes, Kills Man in Burlingame

Caltrain news release: 

At approximately 6:23 a.m. northbound train #305 struck and killed a male trespasser about 30 feet north of the Oak Grove Avenue pedestrian crossing in Burlingame. Emergency personnel are on the scene.

There were no injuries to the passengers on the train or to the train engineer or crew. Preliminary investigation indicates that this was an intentional act, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Transit Police.

Emergency personnel are on the scene. Trains are currently single-tracking at restricted speeds.

Caltrain service is experiencing delays up to 30 to 90 minutes.

A SamTrans bus bridge is in place from the Caltrain Millbrae station to the San Mateo station.

Both SamTrans and BART are honoring Caltrain tickets.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Train is expected to leave as scheduled at 9:30 a.m. from the San Jose Diridon station.

This is Caltrain's second fatality of 2011.

In 2010, there were 11 fatalities on the Caltrain right of way. In 2009, there were 19.
