Caltrans Contest Offers $25K for New Transportation Solutions

Caltrans' "$25K Find a New Way" asks the public to find a unique way to improve California's transportation system for a $25,000 prize.

Described as an "innovation contest," the challenge is open to California residents who are not current or retired State employees or their immediate family members. It's also open to all ages, though contestants under 18 need their parent or guardian's permission.

According to the evaluating criteria, a winning idea will be innovative and unique with a clearly stated goal with "potential to produce a breakthrough or a major change that will improve Caltrans' operations, increase safety or efficiency, save money, or improve California." It will solve an important issue that can "significantly improve or potentially replace current practices." And it will be practical, effective, and economically feasible, an idea that Caltrans could realistically put into action.

Entries of 500 words, with optional one-minute video or Power Point presentation, are due (postmarked or emailed) by 5 p.m. on October 13.

Users of Reddit have already shared a few possible ideas, the most popular of which is "hover crafts."
