Caltrans Worker Fatally Struck by Allegedly Drunk Driver on Interstate 580 in Oakland

A Caltrans worker was killed overnight on Interstate 580 in Oakland after an apparently drunk driver struck a wall and careened into a coned off construction zone.

The victim has been identified as Miguel Angel Rodriguez Delacruz, a 33-year-old resident of Oakland, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

California Highway Patrol officers said the deadly accident occurred shortly after midnight while crews were repaving asphalt on westbound I-580 near the Lakeshore Avenue off-ramp. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene, officers said.

The driver allegedly slammed into a wall on the right side of the freeway, lost control of his car and crossed all westbound lanes. Officers said he then rammed into a tractor, which fatally hit the contract worker.

The driver also hit a pickup truck and a generator before coming to a rest.

“The worker was thrown, you know, approximately 100 feet or so [and] landed on the ground,” CHP officer Travis Yamaguchi said. “In the end, he sustained a fatal injury.”

Officers found open alcohol container inside the still unidentified driver’s trunk. He was not injured and was arrested for driving under the influence.

Three lanes on the left-hand side of the roadway were closed during the investigation but was re-opened Saturday morning.
