Castle Rock Park Warning

Castle Rock hikers are being warned to be on the look out for a sexual assault suspect.

Two people report they were able to escape a man who they say tried to rape them along the popular South Bay trail in the Santa Cruz mountains.

They were specifically on the Saratoga Gap trail off of Highway 35 and Skyline Boulevard last Thursday when they came across a man with a gun.

Rangers say the man got a hold of one of the women's backpacks, but say she was able to slip out of it and run away.

The entrance to the park now has a sketch of the suspect and a warning for visitors.

Those warnings did not scare away Delana Thompson and her two friends during their visit Tuesday.

"I've been up here a lot. I had two men with me so I felt safe and…even if I had just a few women with me, I probably would have felt safe," Thompson said.

Other hikers said on Tuesday, they were surprised the posted warnings didn't mention anything about a fun.

The posting was enough to keep Lori Robson from going on a hike by herself.

"If I had been here alone, I probably would not have done the hike," Robson said.
