OAKLAND — Mike Fiers pitched the second no-hitter of his career Tuesday night, leading the A's to a 2-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds. His first no-hitter came on April 21, 2015 as a member of the Houston Astros.
Fiers threw 131 pitches, allowing just two walks with six strikeouts to record Major League Baseball's first no-hitter of the 2019 season and the 300th in MLB history in a game that was delayed an hour and 38 minutes due to a lighting malfunction in left field.
The no-no nearly ended in the fourth inning when Jesse Winker reached base on a grounder up the middle. Matt Chapman was shifted over and nearly made the play, but the ball bounced off his glove. It was ruled an error.
Fiers also got a pair of great defensive plays behind him in the sixth inning. With one out, Kyle Farmer popped it up into shallow right field, but Jurickson Profar raced back to make a diving catch.
The very next pitch, Joey Votto crushed a fly ball to deep center field, but Ramón Laureano jumped and reached over the fence to steal a home run.
Profar provided all the offense for the A's, ripping an RBI double in the second inning and a solo home run in the seventh. Oakland finished with just five hits of their own.
Fiers' no-hitter comes just over a year after Sean Manaea no-hit the Boston Red Sox on April 21, 2018. It is the 13th no-no in A's history.

A lighting malfunction at the Oakland Coliseum temporarily delayed the start of Tuesday night's game between the A's and the Cincinnati Reds, according to team officials.
The game was scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m., and first pitch was at 8:45 p.m.
It was not clear what caused the stadium lighting to go out, but other electronic equipment, including the giant scoreboard, could be seen operating as usual.
