Collision Near Benicia Bridge Causes Lengthy Backup

Traffic backups abound Saturday night on northbound Interstate Highway 680 outside Martinez in unincorporated Contra Costa County after a collision south of the I-680/Marina Vista interchange, the California Highway Patrol reported.

As many as three vehicles were involved in the collision, first reported at 6:35 p.m. Saturday, according to the CHP. One of those vehicles struck water barrels in the median, which caused problems for both northbound and southbound traffic, the CHP said.

As of 7:45 p.m., the northbound backup was to State Highway 4, about 2.5 miles south of the accident scene.

A witness told the CHP that at least two of the vehicles involved may have been racing before the collision occurred. No injuries were initially reported.
