From shopping carts to old tires, community members took to the Bay Area’s beaches, creeks and neighborhood sites to clear away discarded items Saturday.
With a reported 22,299 pounds of trash and 3,764 pounds of recyclables collected in the county throughout the day, the volunteers stayed busy.
Organizers from the San Mateo Countywide Water Pollution Prevention Program facilitated a countywide photo contest that asked people to share their photos from the day at #CleanupSMC.
Similar efforts took place all over the Bay Area during California Coastal Cleanup Day.
In San Mateo County, there were more than 60 sites and nearly 4,000 volunteers that signed up for service.
