Security at San Jose Airport Questioned By Congressman

Three security breaches at San Jose airport give Eric Swalwell pause.

Congressman Eric Swalwell is calling for tighter perimeter security at Mineta San Jose International Airport after another security breach at the airport.

On Sunday, authorities said Miguel Zaragoza was arrested on charges of trespassing and stealing a maintenance worker's vehicle. It was the third security breach at the airport since April.

The other incidents include a boy managing to stowaway to Hawaii in the wheel well of a jet.

And in August, Marilyn Hartman, who was previously arrested for consistently trying to board Hawaii-bound flights at San Francisco International Airport, somehow slipped past security at SJC.

The San Jose Mercury News reported that it's still not known how Zaragoza, 39, managed to elude security that's undergone additional "training and staff awareness" since the two incidents.

In the meantime, Swalwell said he wants "sensors" that detect security breaches added to the perimeter fence that's currently a six-foot barrier topped with barbed wire, the newspaper reported.

San Jose officials noted that security lapses at airports are "far more common that those that the media reports," according to the newspaper.
